Verified Purchase. I’m sorry to say but this book is just awful. Besides the front cover the content and production value is rock bottom.
I’m sure the author knows something about Maya but where was the publishing team, the layout designer, the copy editor, etc. Also, there are dozens of mistakes where the wrong term is used or there is an obvious grammatical error and garbled sentences. Something’s wrong on nearly every other page. The illustrations are mostly poor and don’t always show what’s being discussed.
The overlaid graphics are inconsistently constructed with crude jagged lines in a computer graphics book! The examples are often too simple, displaying a lack of effort. But the worst problem is that the book is way over priced for such an obviously cheap product.
I definitely do not recommend this book. The cover is nice though. I can say that the book does briefly touch on all the main features of Maya. I like how the lessons are NOT painfully long and the lessons are fairly easy. BUT they never really tell what kind of object that they making to better understand the outcome of the lesson, they would say “create a shape” but what kind of shape?!!

Unfortunately, editing is laborious because of the low-level representation of the data. While existing motion editing methods accomplish modest changes, larger edits can require the artist to “re-animate” the motion by manually selecting a subset of the frames as keyframes.
In this paper, we automatically find sets of frames to serve as keyframes for editing the motion. We formulate the problem of selecting an optimal set of keyframes as a shortest-path problem, and solve it efficiently using dynamic programming. We create a new simplified animation by interpolating the found keyframes using a naive curve fitting technique. By simplifying animation with our algorithm, we realize a new approach to motion editing and stylization founded on the time-tested keyframe interface.

This book is an excellent resource for all Maya users and includes an introduction to computer graphics that will help people new to the world of 3D animation and 3D modeling. For the most part there is more than one way to approach a particular problem. This means that you can use whichever approach is most suited to your needs. Default interface areas!
